The People
Behind the
Movement.
The Spicy Awards are powered by people who believe
that extraordinary change does not begin with fame.
It begins with courage, community, ideas, and action.
Behind the Awards is a wider movement building
pathways from grassroots leadership to global impact.
Spice Without Borders
The Spicy Awards are proudly organized by Spice Without Borders (SWOB) — a global leadership institute and social innovation movement dedicated to discovering, developing, and celebrating changemakers from the margins.
SWOB exists because communities around the world already contain extraordinary people solving extraordinary problems. The challenge is often not a lack of courage or ideas, but a lack of visibility, resources, networks, and opportunities.
The role of the movement is therefore bigger than recognition. It is about developing capacity, connecting ecosystems, amplifying stories, and creating opportunities through which local action can become regional and global influence.
The Spicy Awards are one expression of that larger mission.
A movement begins with a belief.
The Spicy Awards grew from years of working alongside grassroots leaders and recognizing a gap between the people creating change and the systems that determine who gets seen, supported, and connected.
Erick Inghatt Matsanza
Building from the margins upward.
Spice Without Borders was founded in 2015 by Erick Inghatt Matsanza around a conviction that leadership development should not be limited to people who already have access, influence, or institutional power.
Through years of engagement with grassroots leaders, the movement encountered activists defending human rights, creatives reshaping culture, entrepreneurs building opportunities, initiators mobilizing their communities, and innovators designing new solutions.
Many were already creating measurable change. What they often lacked was visibility, connection, resources, mentorship, and a platform through which their work could travel beyond the boundaries of their immediate communities.
The Spicy Awards emerged from that reality. Rather than beginning with celebrity or institutional status, the Awards begin with significance: the depth of a person's contribution and the change their work creates.

We believe change begins locally.
The movement is grounded in a set of principles that place people, communities, dignity, creativity, and collaboration at the center of development.
Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, resilience, and possibility.
Leadership rooted in values creates more sustainable and meaningful change.
Communities are the best drivers of solutions to the challenges they understand firsthand.
Some of the most powerful innovations emerge from communities that are frequently overlooked.
Collaboration multiplies individual contribution into collective transformation.
Lasting change begins locally and can expand into regional and global relevance.
Recognition should create opportunity, not simply provide a moment of celebration.
The movement is bigger than the Awards.
Whether you are a changemaker, organization, partner, sponsor, volunteer, media platform, institution, or community builder, there is a place for you in the journey from grassroots leadership to global impact.
