The story of the Spicy Awards begins with Spice Without Borders — a global changemaker development ecosystem founded in Kenya in 2015 around a simple conviction: every person has purpose, and every community has strengths.
From the beginning, the work has focused on people who are close to the problems they seek to solve: activists, creatives, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and innovators developing ideas and solutions from within their own communities.
The philosophy was never about waiting for permission from the center. It was about recognizing the power that already exists at the margins — and creating the leadership, skills, relationships, platforms, and opportunities needed for that power to grow.

Spice Without Borders Begins
Founded in Kenya by Erick Inghatt Matsanza, Spice Without Borders emerged from a belief in growing socially conscious leaders and supporting solutions rooted in local realities.
