Our Story

Origins of the Spicy Awards and the Spice Without Borders movement

Celebrating Changemakers from the Margins

The Spicy Awards were born from a simple but powerful belief: Some of the world’s most extraordinary changemakers are the least recognized.

Across Africa and around the globe, countless activists, creatives, entrepreneurs, initiators, and innovators are solving real problems, transforming communities, and inspiring hope—often without recognition, resources, or visibility. The Spicy Awards exist to change that.

We celebrate those who create impact long before the headlines arrive, believing that recognition is more than a trophy—it is a catalyst for greater influence, opportunity, and lasting transformation.

Powered by Spice Without Borders, the Spicy Awards have become a platform where grassroots leadership meets global recognition.

Our Story

The idea for the Spicy Awards emerged from years of working alongside grassroots leaders through Spice Without Borders, a leadership institute founded in 2015 by Erick Inghatt Matsanza. Throughout this journey, one reality became impossible to ignore.

Communities across Africa are filled with courageous individuals building solutions with limited resources but extraordinary determination. They are creating businesses that uplift communities, defending human rights, preserving culture, advancing innovation, nurturing young leaders, and solving local challenges in ways that deserve global attention. Yet too often, these stories remain invisible.

The Spicy Awards were created to discover these hidden changemakers, amplify their voices, celebrate their achievements, and connect them with new opportunities for growth, collaboration, and impact. What began as a vision has evolved into a movement celebrating leadership that grows from the grassroots upward.

Why “Spicy”?

Being Spicy means refusing to accept the status quo.

  • It means leading with courage.
  • Creating with purpose.
  • Innovating despite obstacles.
  • Standing up for justice.
  • Building solutions where others see barriers.

The chili became our symbol because every chili is different in colour, flavour, and intensity—yet every one carries unmistakable fire.

In the same way, every changemaker brings unique gifts, perspectives, and experiences that make the world stronger.

Different stories. Different journeys. One shared purpose: Creating positive change.

More Than an Awards Ceremony

The Spicy Awards are designed as a complete experience that brings together recognition, learning, collaboration, and celebration. The annual experience includes:

  • The Spicy Circle Summit
  • Leadership conversations and keynote sessions
  • Innovation and impact exhibitions
  • Networking and partnership opportunities
  • The Gala Awards Ceremony
  • Storytelling and media visibility for finalists
  • Community building among Africa’s emerging changemakers

Because real impact grows through relationships, shared learning, and collective action.

Our Promise

Every nomination tells a story.

Every finalist represents possibility.

Every award celebrates a ripple effect that reaches far beyond one individual.

The Spicy Awards exist to ensure that changemakers from the margins are no longer overlooked—but recognized, connected, celebrated, and empowered to shape the future.

Because the next global solution may already be growing in someone’s community.

It simply deserves to be seen.
